Council Resolves to Surrender Kenyatta University Title Deed to Ministry of Lands

After the
new council cooperated with a cabinet directive to allow for the re-planning of
the 447.3 hectares parcel of land, the Kenyatta University land dispute has
changed direction.

Following
Prof. Shem Migot Adholla’s resignation, the new University council, chaired by
Prof. Chrispus Kiamba, decided to turn over the land title deed to the Ministry
of Lands in order to facilitate the re-planning and excision of 410 acres in a
letter to head of public service Joseph Kinyua dated July 15, 2022.

The council
gave acting vice chancellor Prof. Waceke Wanjohi instructions in the letter to
give Ardhi House the title deed so that it could help with the demarcation and
processing of individual title deeds for Kenyatta University Referral Hospital,
which was given 180 acres.

The World
Health Organization (WHO) will receive 30 acres for the construction of a
regional hub; the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention will receive
10 acres; and the Kamae Squatters will receive 190 acres to settle on. putting
an end to years of conflict between them and the University.

In
accordance with a mandate from the University Council, Prof. Wanjohi, the
acting vice chancellor, took over from Prof. Paul Wainaina, who was suspended
due to the land dispute. She stated that she had not yet acquired the original
copy of the title deed.

However, she
requested that the re-planning be carried out by the ministry of land utilizing
the data and records in the land file of the University as directed by the
cabinet.

On the same
day that the new council followed the cabinet’s directive, the court issued
orders prohibiting transactions on the university land.
