Kenyatta
University is in trouble after Cabinet Secretary Joseph Kinyua demanded that
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Paul Wainaina surrender the university’s title deed
after a dispute over ownership of a 1,000-acre plot of property between the
institution and its affiliate referral hospital grew more heated.
This
is even in light of allegations that Prof. Wainaina has quit the institution
for an unspecified reason.
Prof
Wainaina addressed staff on Tuesday morning telling them “This is probably the
last time you’ll see me addressing you as VC”.
The
university council has reportedly been replaced, and a new administration is
expected to take over later on Tuesday.
This
occurs just two days after President Uhuru Kenyatta castigated the university
administration for opposing plans to give the World
Health Organization (WHO) access to a portion of the learning institution’s
land for the establishment of a Sh600 million emergency hub to support its

Hospital and the university have been at conflict over the land; KU claims
it was divided up without its consent.
The
idea to give land to WHO was not in the university’s best interest, the vice
chancellor (VC) Prof. Wainaina claimed in a press interview last week because
no discussions were conducted and they were not involved.
However,
without identifying any names, President Kenyatta claimed that some people do
not consider the interests of the country while making decisions. He advised
such managers to change their ways or prepare to retire one month after the end
of his administration.
“We
have individuals who are very ignorant and behave as if they have never entered
a classroom… they don’t understand that Kenya has never operated in isolation.
We shall deal with those individuals swiftly and very effectively,” he
said.
The
Kenyan government has set aside 12.4 hectares for the WHO Emergency Hub and
allocated $5 million (Sh600 million) toward the project’s completion in
three years.
